LEGO® Speed Champions 8-Stud Era

The 8-Stud Era is the LEGO® Speed Champions mature generation — 64 sets and counting, launched in the 2020 model year on a wider eight-stud chassis platform that fits a two-seat minifigure cabin, accurate side intakes, printed badge details, and proportions that hold up next to display models from rival diecast lines. Every Speed Champions set since 2020 sits in this era.

The 8-Stud Era is the LEGO® Speed Champions generation that turned the line from a charming-but-cartoonish toy into a serious display-model collectible. The shift happened in the 2020 model year and reaches forward indefinitely — every set released since wears the wider chassis, the longer wheelbase, and the more-faithful proportions.

The mechanical change was simple on paper. From 2015 to 2019, the standard car was six studs wide. From 2020 onwards, it is eight studs wide. But the consequences ripple through every part of the build: a longer wheelbase, room for a two-seat cabin, accurate side intakes that don't compete with the door cutout, headlights and tail-lights printed in the right proportions, and badge printings that read at arm's length. The 8-stud cars look like models. The 6-stud cars look like toys.

The era opened with a 2020 transition wave that re-introduced existing brand pillars on the new format — Ferrari F8 Tributo (76895), McLaren Senna GTR (76892, polybag), Audi Sport quattro S1 (76897), Lamborghini Urus ST-X / Huracán dual (76899), Toyota GR Supra (76901). The wave's job was to demonstrate the new platform across the line's main brand spread, and it shipped on schedule despite COVID-era retail disruption.

The middle years (2021–2024) are where the era's editorial range opened up. The 2021 wave introduced the line's first dedicated F1-grid program (76895 Ferrari F8 alongside 76898 Jaguar Formula E, then 76906 1970 Ferrari 512 M and 76910 Aston Martin Valkyrie/Vantage GT3 in 2022). The 2023 wave added the Porsche 963 LMDh (76916) and the McLaren Solus GT/F1 LM dual (76918). The 2024 wave shipped the largest single-year lineup in the line's history (10 sets), led by the Ferrari F40 Supercar (76934) and the Mustang Dark Horse (76920). By the end of 2024, the 8-stud catalogue had passed the 6-stud era's total set count.

The 2025 model year was the line's largest ever — 17 sets shipped, anchored by the 2024 F1 grid program (every constructor that ran in 2024 got a Speed Champions chassis), the Ferrari Ultimate Garage successor in spirit (76934 F40 Supercar, 77242 SF-24 F1, 77254 SF90 XX), the McLaren MCL38 (77251), and the dual-vehicle Lamborghini Revuelto/Huracán STO (77238). 2026 carries the same volume forward, with the McLaren W1 (77257), Porsche 911 GT3 RS (77239), Audi R26 F1 (77259), and the Lightning McQueen / Back to the Future film-vehicle pair (77255, 77256) leading.

For collectors, the 8-Stud Era is where the line's display value lives. The longer chassis, accurate proportions, and printed-badge detail mean these sets pose well alongside Bburago, AUTOart, and Spark diecast in the same scale class. The era also corresponds to the line's peak production volume — every 8-stud set is in print or has been within the last three years, so secondary-market premiums are smaller than the 6-stud era's.
