1985 Audi Sport quattro S1

The Group B rally car that finished what the original Quattro started — short wheelbase, 500-plus hp, the Pikes Peak record.

Set #76897 2020 253 pieces 8-stud Retired

The Audi Sport quattro S1 was the second “evolution” of the original quattro rally car, rebuilt at the limit of Group B regulations: 320 mm shorter wheelbase, 600+ kg lighter, larger turbo, larger intercooler, larger wings. Walter Röhrl drove it to victory at the 1987 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb — the run captured in Audi’s well-known marketing footage. Group B was banned at the end of 1986; the S1 was the last factory rally car of that era.

GROUP B RALLY

1985 Audi Sport quattro S1

Röhrl’s Pikes Peak car

The S1 evolution debuted at the 1985 Argentina Rally — the third Group B specification of the original quattro. Engine: 2.1-litre inline-five with a single turbocharger, 500-plus hp dependent on boost setting (Audi never published a definitive figure). Drive went to all four wheels through a five-speed sequential gearbox.

Walter Röhrl took it to a 10:47.85 Pikes Peak run in 1987 — the first sub-eleven-minute climb of the unpaved hillclimb course, captured on Audi’s in-car film. Stig Blomqvist and Hannu Mikkola also drove the car in WRC events. After Group B’s mid-1986 ban, the chassis was retired.

The build

Eight-stud Group B

76897 is one of the early 8-stud-wide Speed Champions sets (the changeover happened in 2020). The S1’s extreme front and rear bodywork extensions translate well at this scale; both wings are printed elements, not stickers.

The HB Audi Sport livery (white with red, black and yellow blocks) is delivered through stickers across both side-pod panels.
