McLaren 720S

McLaren’s second-generation Super Series — the 720S, the car that finally beat the Ferrari 488.

Set #75880 2017 168 pieces 6-stud Retired

The McLaren 720S replaced the 650S in 2017 and represented the second generation of McLaren’s Super Series. It used an evolved 4.0-litre M840T twin-turbo V8 (720 PS, 770 Nm), a new Monocage II carbon tub, and unusual “eye-socket” front headlamp ducting that doubled as cooling intakes for the front brakes. Critics consistently rated it more dynamically capable than the Ferrari 488 GTB — a verdict that marked McLaren’s coming-of-age as a road-car maker.

The 488-beater

The 720S’s 4.0-litre M840T twin-turbo V8 produces 720 PS (710 hp) and 770 Nm of torque. Transmission is the 7-speed dual-clutch shared with other McLaren road cars. The Monocage II carbon tub extends into the windscreen surround, making the A-pillar a continuous structural piece.

The 720S was the first McLaren that motoring critics consistently rated as more capable than the Ferrari 488 GTB. Jeremy Clarkson’s Sunday Times review (“this is McLaren grown up”) was emblematic. McLaren followed with the 720S Spider in 2018 and the 765LT track-focused variant in 2020.

The build

Six-stud Super Series

75880 is the 6-stud Speed Champions chassis. The 720S’s eye-socket headlamp design is captured by transparent sloped elements; the dihedral doors are not articulated in the LEGO® build.

McLaren orange (“Volcano Orange”) is delivered through colour-injected bricks rather than stickers — a cleaner finish than later sticker-heavy McLaren sets.
