1968 Ford Mustang Fastback

Bullitt’s Highland Green Mustang Fastback — the 1968 GT390 silhouette captured in Speed Champions form.

Set #75884 2018 183 pieces 6-stud Retired

The 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback in Highland Green is one of the most-photographed cars in cinema, thanks to its starring role in Steve McQueen’s 1968 film Bullitt and its extended chase sequence through San Francisco. The actual film car (chassis 8R02S125559) sold for $3.74 million in 2020 — the highest price ever paid for a Mustang at auction. This Speed Champions set captures the silhouette without explicitly licensing the film.

CLASSIC PONY

1968 Ford Mustang Fastback

GT390 fastback coupe

The 1968 Mustang GT390 used Ford’s 6.4-litre FE-series big-block V8 producing 325 hp. Body styles included the fastback (“2+2”) coupe; transmission was either a four-speed manual or a three-speed Cruise-O-Matic automatic.

Bullitt was filmed in 1968 with two GT390 Mustangs (a hero car and a stunt car). Both survived: the stunt car was rediscovered in Mexico in the 2000s, the hero car remained in private hands and sold for $3.74 million in 2020 — then a Mustang auction record.

The build

Six-stud Mustang Fastback

75884 is the 6-stud Speed Champions chassis. The Mustang’s long bonnet and steeply-raked fastback C-pillar are rendered with sloped 1×2 elements; the side-vent indents are stickers.

Highland Green is the chosen colour, mirroring the Bullitt cars without explicit film licensing. The build also includes 5-spoke Magnum 500 wheels in chrome — the wheel design used on the film cars.
